False Gold

a story & excerpt from a future caperflower magazine

by juliette auckberry
August 19, 2025

A Jeweller's Hands are quite familiar with the feel of false gold. It almost softens when gripped, too warm to the touch. The colour fades, often into the warm amber of the cheaper copper underneath.

I suppose, from a distance, or even at a glance, an unsuspecting observer would never be able to tell. Certainly to my untrained fingers I had not known this gold was false when I had purchased her rings for far too much money than I care to admit. I had been putting aside money here and there. Just a couple hundred every few paychecks, not enough to make a noticeable change in our spending habits.

My father had told me to “steer clear” of a joint account. I never understood why. I trust my wife. Does he not trust his?

One night, however, she had noticed we were short of a few hundred pounds from the usual amount I earned through my job at the paper.

“Did you get demoted?”, she asked, sprawled across our bed.

“Oh no, I’ve just been saving up for something.” I replied.

This seemed to pacify what I feared would become an argument. The next month, I took these savings and went into the jewellers. The man inside had grown accustomed to my face as it often peered through the windows, hoping to find something without asking directly. He took me in kindly. He had an heir of joy around him, being a man of big stature, it is sure to me that children in the winter could often mistake him for Santa Claus.

He showed me many rings far outside of my tight budget. Fortunately these rings fell far out of my criteria for what I wanted. I explained to him my budgetary constraints, much to my embarrassment. He took it in stride and led me to a corner with rings I could afford.

I saw the one. Uneven, warped. A single emerald sat in what appeared to be claws. I asked for the price.

“1900.”

My heart jumped. I had 1600.

“Can we do 1500?” I asked.

He hesitated.

“1750.” He replied.

I bit my tongue.

“1550.”, I countered.

“1650 is the lowest I can imagine I’d go for this one.”

His demeanor reveals to me that it is not worth bargaining lower. I fork over the extra 50 and walk out of the store with the ring in a red velvet box.

My wife, then girlfriend, had always expressed that she didn't need a big deal surrounding a proposal. That night, I took her to the bench overlooking the river where we had spent our first date eating sandwiches on a lunch break. I proposed, she said yes.

Months pass since the wedding and she comes to me. She shows me the engagement ring, worn on its sides, golden surface flaking away, staining her fingers with a copper bruise. I suppose it doesn’t matter that the ring is fake. I personally think copper compliments her complexion completely.

Being able to say things that do not make sense is a gift that many nosey people just take offense to. Greedy greedy minds staring at paintings of blobs frantically failing to grasp the very concept of expression. Searching on google the meaning of songs that plead to the listener that it’s not about understanding. I spend most of my time wishing that the evil love child of incessant want, and shallow curiosity never discovered the most beautiful aspects of this world. Some meanings are just better off being interpreted subjectively.

i've reached eastern concorde,
at walden pond, living in henry's cabin.
in a weird limbo of reflection and absorption
remembering what was, like that's so raven for the past.

the water shows me who i was
sometimes i refuse to believe it.
ambition is my passion
can't believe there was a second without it.

i get a letter in the mail
it's from life; a sepia picture.
round framed glasses and braces
next to someone long forgotten

“you’re allowed three great ones”
palminteri was scripted to say by de niro
maybe she was one of them

The sky is an organism and it’s upset with us

a story & excerpt from a future caperflower magazine

by Seven x GBPITS
June 24, 2025

I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to assume that it’s an evil entity – but if I am being completely honest, it’s a bit of a sketchy situation. For example, the red cluster. It’s recently gained this new appearance for me in the last few years; a gaping jaw that’s gnashing for a bite out of me whenever I stare for too long. And then there’s the blue one, which tends to look more like an eye. I point these things out to my partner, but he tends to laugh it off as me being a “schizo”.

I remember reading about our planet’s history, and I swear, everything seemed so simple. They were called “constellations”, they had definitive shapes that weren’t up for interpretation, we were in the “Milky Way Galaxy”… I don’t think they expected some unknown force to shove Andromeda at us, though. Now, based on old photographs, the sky is bright all the time.

Sometimes I think that it, the sky, studies us directly. Maybe that’s a bit geocentric of me, though. It’s just, if I were the sky, and I saw the organisms of one of my worlds single-handedly destroying what I created… I’d be frowning, too. Not to mention, whenever I go outside, I can almost feel its presence around me. Like an overwhelming, looming feeling… It's almost physical. Then again, maybe I am “schizophrenic” as my boyfriend suggests. I just can’t help but notice that it shines brighter when I hear about another worldwide tragedy, almost like it’s frowning. I would frown, too.

Also, it doesn’t help that we recently found the planet “Saturn”, the same planet that was photographed and probed thousands of years ago before going missing. When humanity found it lying starless for the second time in history, it was discovered that it had lungs, and an eerily slow heartbeat. The aforementioned “Space Quakes” theories, originally deemed to be absolutely insane (written nearly ~2680 years ago), were just proven true. And it’s not from a distant celestial body like we thought it was. It turned out to be much, much closer to home. So, maybe I'm onto something with the sky being alive.

Anyways, I sent up a DIY rocket with a recorder (they’re so cheap to make), and recorded it talking back to me:

this is a test article; first rendition of how we might start publishing blogs about music we find and like etc... this could be a fun medium to have people write and post their opinions and finds, expand and collaborate on ideas :steamhappy:

not sure how big this idea can grow because of my website-building capabilites and how many people want to participate, but i think this will be interesting to develop for as long as i can. hope i can stay on top of my life to execute ideas as well as i want to. everyone else is mostly focusing on their solo work and i can't blame them for it; i probably should be doing the same.

regardless, love love, check for updates regularly.
